After reading the brief, I have had a few ideas about what I want to do for my assignment; a sense of space.

Firstly, I did some research into what kind of things other people have done. This involved a trip to the Turner Contemporary art gallery in Margate. The exhibits allowed me to draw inspiration from other ‘artists’ and designers that had not necessarily done what I have to do fir this assignment, but have used the same ideas and concepts to achieve what they have done. For example, one of the exhibits showed photographs of a journey along the coast, taken at set time intervals to show the progress of the journey. I have also seen this method used in one of the books shown to us in a graphhic design lecture, where ______ takes photos of themself walking through and around their house, which is then made into a book.

Having seen these examples, I wanted to replicate this style within the book I will be creating, as well as the website to go alongside the book. I was thinking of perhaps driving somewhere quite far away (potentially from the broadstairs campus to my house), taking photographs at set time intervals, and try to take in as much as I possibly can from where I stop. This would involve taking photographs of anything significant, insignificant, strange, out of place etc. that people may not notice at first glance. The way this would link into the ‘sense of space’ theme is that it would allow the reader to see just how unaware of their own surroundings they are (especially for someone who frequently does long distance driving) and what fills the space around them even if they aren’t aware of it.

Another twist on this idea that I have thought about is doing the journey, but avoiding all major roads (where possible). Taking a b-road journey that would take significantly longer, but would be full of things that anyone who would take the fastest possible roads back would not notice at all, as they are passively unaware that these places even exist, and would never take the time  to travel via a more scenic route over a motorway.

Although I have thought aboiut what I want to do for the book, I haven’t yet decided how I will translate this to a 3 page website. The stuff that I have learned in the last few web design lectures has allowed me to make a much better website than I could before, and I have created a template from which I can work with and around using dreamweaver.

Now I am going to start looking at what kind of layout I want to use, typography, and content (however the actual content will not be shot for a couple of weeks as I am going to schedule it in with a planned trip home.

The reason I have chosen this design as my final piece is because I feel that it fully encapsulates the main features of the word. I chose the word ‘fidgety’ because by nature, I am prone to ‘fidgeting’, and have been throughout my life. I find it difficult to keep still sometimes and I felt that this would be the best word for me to do this assignment on as I could associate myself to it.

I have decided that the word ‘Lonely’ is not the word that I wisxh to use for this assignment. I feel my reasoning for using this word was not good enough and that my personal uinderstanding was not enough either. I have decided to use the word ‘fidgety’ (under TENSE) as I think that I can better relate to this word. and therfore produce a better piece.

Here is a small brainstorm of the key features of this word and the angles I can take when I start to mock up some possible designs.

For this assignment, I have decided to use the word ‘Lonely’ as the emotional state I wish to portray. This is because I believe that at the moment, I can greatly relate to this word, as I feel pretty homesick. To me, this is the word I feel that I can work with the most because of this. Below, I have drawn a brainstorm to work out how I am going to approach this, by highlighting the features of the word so that I can better understand what I need to do.

Today we had to do a presentation on a piece of graphic design that had an emotional effect on us. The brief stated that we had to (in up to three minutes) tell the rest of the class what the piece was, why I chose it, and what emotional effect it had on me. For this. I chose to do a presentation on the Red Hot Chili Peppers album artwork for their album Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
